Maximise your Fuel Efficiency and top tips to save a buck

Everyone is feeling the pinch and looking at ways to save a little.

Also driving is getting more and more expensive and according to research from Finder.com.au 2.5 million Aussie drivers say that the cost of petrol is one of their biggest stresses. “With price hikes continuing to go along with no sign of dissipating at all, it’s really important that Australians look at ways to save money on their petrol,” Finder’s Kate Browne said. We’ll explore practical and effective fuel-saving tips to help you navigate these challenging times and keep more money in your pocket.

So how can you save some $ and get the most out of each tank?

Shop around

First of all, it’s worth comparing prices on where to find the cheapest diesel fuel. “If you do shop around for your petrol prices, for example, in a 60L car you can save up to $20 for a full tank,” Ms Browne from Finder said. “That’s pretty substantial if you’re filling up once a week.” We recommend to always fill up with branded diesel. It will pay in the long run.

Here are some apps or websites:

Shopping dockets

It does pay to use those shopping dockets to make every cent count. Coles and Woolies are still offering the discount. NRMA members can save five cents a litre on premium fuel and three cents a litre on regular fuel at Ampol and Caltex service stations.Loyalty card discounts are also available at 7-Eleven. Maybe just keep them in the car, or the apps ready on your mobile, so they are there to use when you are filling up.

Driving Style

We don’t want to hear it – BUT with prices that high – it’s time to evaluate your driving style. If you are braking and accelerating a lot – you are using more fuel. If you have that roof rack on – that uses more petrol too.

The faster you drive, the more aerodynamic drag is applied to your vehicle and the more fuel you burn. Studies have shown that varying your speed up and down between 75 and 85 km per hour every 18 seconds can increase your fuel use by 20%. So driving at a sensible speed will really save you $.

RAC UK has summarised it so nicely: “

Excessive speed is the biggest fuel-guzzling factor so having a light right foot and ensuring all acceleration is gentle is very important to fuel-efficient driving.

Of course you will always have to accelerate a number of times on a journey, but that doesn’t mean you have to pull away like you’re on the starting line at Silverstone!

Probably the biggest secret to achieving high mpg is driving in the highest possible gear for your vehicle while keeping within the speed limit. The best advice in urban areas is to change up through the gears as quickly as you can with the lowest revs possible, probably at around 2000rpm. Remember: the faster an engine spins, the more fuel it uses.”

Trips

The more short trips you take, the higher your fuel consumption. It does pay to plan and organise to run all errands in one trip if possible. Several short trips with a cold start engine can use twice as much fuel as a long trip.

Maintain your vehicle

Regular servicing by a professional and maintenance, does not only make sure everything is in working order, but also improves the efficiency of your vehicle and therefor improves fuel consumption.

Tyre pressure, correct oil, blowing smoke are all contributing factors for your vehicle running at opitmum condition. Here are some top tips on how to give your vehicle a quick check over.

Lighten Your Load:

Remove unnecessary items from your vehicle to reduce weight. Extra weight requires more fuel to move, so keeping your car clutter-free can contribute to better fuel efficiency.

Use the Right Oil:

Ensure you are using the recommended grade of motor oil for your vehicle. Using the right oil can reduce friction in the engine and improve fuel efficiency.

Aerodynamic Considerations:

Remove roof racks and carriers when not in use to reduce aerodynamic drag. This simple adjustment can lead to improved fuel efficiency, especially during highway driving.

Proper Tire Maintenance:

Keep your tires properly inflated. Under-inflated tires create more rolling resistance, requiring more fuel to maintain speed. Regularly check and maintain the correct tire pressure as per your vehicle’s specifications.

Engine Warm-Up:

Avoid prolonged idling to warm up your engine. Modern engines warm up more efficiently when driving. Idling consumes fuel without providing any mileage, so minimize warm-up time during cold starts.

Smooth Acceleration and Braking: – Practice smooth acceleration and braking. Sudden starts and stops not only waste fuel but also contribute to wear and tear on your vehicle. Gradual acceleration and deceleration are more fuel-efficient.

Cruise Control on Highways: – Use cruise control on highways to maintain a consistent speed. This helps in optimizing fuel efficiency by preventing unnecessary speed fluctuations.

Air Conditioning Usage:

Use air conditioning judiciously, as it can significantly impact fuel efficiency. Consider using the vehicle’s ventilation system or opening windows at lower speeds to reduce the load on the engine.

Choose the Right Fuel: – Use the recommended fuel type for your vehicle. Using premium fuel in a car designed for regular unleaded may not provide any additional benefits and can be an unnecessary expense.

Regular Engine Check-ups: – Schedule regular engine check-ups to identify and address any issues that may affect fuel efficiency. A well-maintained engine operates more efficiently, leading to better fuel economy.

These practical tips can make a tangible difference in saving money on fuel. Stay informed, drive efficiently, and prioritize maintenance to alleviate the financial burden on your household budget.
