Diesel Prices Are Brutal. Here’s What Actually Makes a Difference.

You Can’t Control the Price. You Can Control This.

Global events are pushing fuel prices up, and it’s not letting up anytime soon.. And while there’s not much you can do about what’s on the sign at the servo, there’s quite a bit you can do about how much fuel you’re actually burning.
We work on diesels every day – common rail passenger cars, 4WDs, light commercials, heavy trucks. One thing is consistent: the way a vehicle is maintained and the way it’s driven makes a real difference to fuel consumption. More than most people realise. And a lot of it is in your hands.

Your Driving Style

This is the one nobody wants to hear. But driving behaviour can shift fuel consumption by 20–30% in real-world conditions.

At current prices, that’s worth paying attention to.

The main things that cost you:
• Hard acceleration and heavy braking. The engine burns the most fuel under heavy load. Smooth inputs are cheaper.
• Speed. Aerodynamic drag climbs fast above 100 km/h. Every extra 10 km/h costs you at the bowser.
• Idling. Modern diesels don’t need a long warm-up. Sitting still burns fuel and gets you nowhere.
• Roof racks and accessories. If it’s not being used, take it off. The drag at highway speed adds up over distance.
Varying speed between 75–85 km/h every 18 seconds can increase fuel use by up to 20%. Cruise control on the highway is one of the cheapest efficiency gains going.

Tyre Pressure

Simple, quick, free – and one of the most consistently overlooked things we see.

A tyre running 20% below its recommended pressure creates more rolling resistance. The engine works harder. Fuel consumption goes up.

Check them cold, use the spec on the door placard, and if you’re a 4WD owner who airs down off-road, make sure you’re back up to pressure before you hit the highway.

Your Fuel Injection System

This is where it gets into our area. We specialise in diesel fuel injection in Sydney, and this is something we diagnose regularly.

A modern common rail diesel injects fuel at up to 2,500 bar – multiple events per combustion cycle, with tight tolerances throughout. When injectors wear or the high-pressure system starts to degrade, the ECU compensates. Usually, that compensation costs you fuel.

Signs the fuel injection system may be affecting your consumption:

  • Fuel use has crept up without a change in how or where you’re driving
  • Rough idle or hesitation under load
  • More exhaust smoke than normal
  • Loss of power, especially when towing or climbing
  • Hard starting, particularly when cold

Any of those sound familiar? A proper diesel fuel injection inspection is worth doing. A worn injector caught early is a straightforward fix. Left alone, the downstream damage gets expensive quickly.

A single out-of-spec injector can increase fuel consumption by 3–5% on its own. Across a high-kilometre vehicle or a fleet, that’s a real cost.

Servicing

A properly serviced diesel runs more efficiently. That’s not a sales pitch — it’s just how engines work. Less restriction, less friction, better combustion.

What makes the biggest difference:

  • Air filter. A clogged air filter disrupts the fuel-air mixture. Cheap to replace, often left too long.
  • Fuel filter. Protects the injectors and maintains correct fuel delivery pressure. Critical on high-pressure common rail systems.
  • Engine oil specification. The right viscosity for your engine reduces internal friction. It’s specified for a reason.
  • EGR and DPF condition. When these aren’t functioning properly, combustion efficiency drops and fuel consumption climbs. If the DPF light is on, don’t ignore it.

At Sydney Diesel Centre, we are diesel experts. No shortcuts, no guesswork.

Fuel Quality

Not all diesel is equal. Branded fuels have better lubricity and additive packages – both matter for protecting your injection system over time.

The small premium at the bowser is cheap compared to what injector damage costs.

That said, you can still shop around among the quality options:

FuelCheck NSW – live price data across NSW

FuelPrice Australia – good for comparing across suburbs

FuelRadar – useful for highway and regional runs

Trip Planning

Multiple cold-start short trips can use up to twice the fuel of a single longer run covering the same distance. A diesel at operating temperature is at its most efficient. Where you can, consolidate runs and plan routes to avoid unnecessary stop-start driving.

Fuel Tank – Don’t Run It Low

Most people don’t realise the fuel system relies on the tank more than just storage. In many vehicles, the fuel pump is cooled by the fuel itself. Regularly running the tank low means less cooling, which can increase wear over time.

It also increases the chance of pulling any settled water or contamination through the system – putting more strain on filters, pumps, and injectors.

Keeping your tank above a quarter is a simple habit that helps protect the entire fuel system.

Fuel prices are outside your control. How much your diesel uses isn’t – at least not entirely.

Driving habits, tyre pressure, servicing, and fuel injection condition all have a genuine impact on what you spend.

That’s what we focus on at Sydney Diesel Centre: finding the actual cause, not just treating the symptom. If your diesel is using more fuel than it should, or something doesn’t feel right, give us a call.
